CPC Co-Chairs Congratulate Mexico's President-Elect López Obrador and Welcome Bilateral Cooperation

Washington, D.C.- Congressional Progressive Caucus Co-Chairs Reps. Mark Pocan (D-WI) and Raúl M. Grijalva (D-AZ) released the following statement in response to the victory of Andrés Manuel Lopez Obrador in Mexico's presidential election (a Spanish translation follows):

"We congratulate President-elect Andrés Manuel López Obrador on his historic victory in Mexico’s national elections. The U.S. Congress considers Mexico a vital partner, now more than ever, and the Congressional Progressive Caucus looks forward to working with the López Obrador administration on further strengthening relations between our two countries in a spirit of mutual respect and equal partnership.

"We applaud President-elect López Obrador's advocacy for the human rights of migrants and refugees, and his call to address the root causes that lead them to risk their lives and flee their countries. We look forward to working with his government to advance a progressive renegotiation of NAFTA to prevent the displacement and uprooting of our communities, improve the lives of workers, and protect our shared natural resources in both countries. Additionally, we look forward to collaborating bilaterally on ending the alarming hyper-militarization of law enforcement and state-security practices, as well as ending the senseless ‘war on drugs,’ which has led to so many lost and broken lives. We also remain deeply concerned over the violence that marred Mexico's electoral processes, as more than 100 politicians and candidates were murdered since campaigns began in September.

"Finally, we appreciate the president-elect’s stated vision for international relationships that depart from ‘war and hegemony,’ and instead promote ‘fraternity and cooperation between peoples and nations.’ We will similarly advance such principles as the foundation for productive collaboration between our peoples."
